Karen phipps – Stained glass
My name is Karen Phipps. I’m originally from Illinois and retired from healthcare administration a few years ago. My husband, Dave, and I moved to Sparta permanently in 2021 after numerous corporate moves, definitely one of our best decisions.
I have always loved glass and how it captures light. My passion began with a stained glass class at Charlotte, NC’s Central Piedmont Community College in 1982.
Each stained glass project begins with a pattern cut into individual pieces. The type and color of glass is selected. Each piece of glass is hand cut, edges ground smooth and wrapped with copper foil. The individual pieces of glass are then fitted and soldered together. A black or copper patina may be applied and finally waxed and polished. The final product is a piece of stained glass art that is transformed into something magical with sunlight.
